When Eating Fruits Makes You Sick: Fructose Intolerance

Many people suffer from gastrointestinal problems, but hardly any are aware that fructose intolerance can lead not only to flatulence, diarrhoea, and irritable bowel syndrome, but that it may also, in some cases, lead to depression (biochemical processes caused by fructose inhibit the absorption of hormones such as serotonin).

About 20% of the German population suffers from fructose intolerance. There are two kinds of intolerance: primary (one suffers from it since birth) and secondary (acquired). Secondary intolerance is most often caused by inflammation of the intestinal wall, or fungal diseases. Fruit, raisins, and particular kinds of vegetables bring about intestinal problems. In many instances, fructose intolerance is only discovered accidentally after years of unsuccessful treatments.
It is therefore crucial to keep in mind fructose intolerance as a possible answer to intestinal problems.

 Diagnosis:
1)    challenge test: the patient drinks a fructose solution
2)    thorough Applied-Kinesiology test
3)    stool examination
4)    genetic blood tests

Steps two, three, and four can be carried out in our practice. Step one will be completed by a Gastroenterologist, who is part of our extensive network of specialists.
